Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Higher Depression Risk

Consuming processed foods and beverages that contain artificial sweeteners may increase depression risk, a new study has found. A high intake of ultra-processed foods in general was also linked to a higher risk of depression, which confirms the findings of other recent studies.

In the latest study, researchers analyzed health data, including food questionnaires, from over 31,000 adults aged 42-62. They looked at overall intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) as well as different individual components, including artificial sweeteners.

Higher UPF intake was associated with a greater risk of depression as well as other health issues like diabetes and hypertension. When the data was broken down further, artificially sweetened foods and beverages were more significantly associated with depression than other types of UPFs.

The study did have its limitations– for example, it used self-reported data and only included women– but it does follow other research that links UPFs to depression (as noted above) and artificial sweeteners to heart problems and other issues, suggesting that both are best avoided. Ginger Fights Inflammation, May Calm Autoimmune ‘Hyperactivity’

Ginger root (Zingiber officinale) contains compounds that have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties and may be able to calm the particular type of inflammation associated with autoimmune disorders, some recent research has discovered.

The study specifically examined the effects of ginger on neutrophils, which are a type of white blood cell. Normally, neutrophils help the body to fight off infections, but they can become overactive and stimulate the inflammation behind many autoimmune diseases.

Researchers first found that a supplement containing 6-gingerol– a main antioxidant compound in ginger– helped to calm overactive neutrophils in mice. Then, they evaluated the effects of a ginger supplement in healthy volunteers, finding that it helped make neutrophils more resistant to overactivity.

More quality clinical trials are still needed to confirm these preliminary findings, and ginger supplements may not be a good choice for everyone with an autoimmune issue. However, most experts agree that cooking with ginger is generally a safe way for everyone to add it to their diet.

The Mission-Critical Vitamin for Your Brain, Energy, & More

Did you know that up to 40% of the U.S. population may be low on vitamin B12– and even several others of the 8 essential B vitamins?

That number can shoot even higher for plant-based eaters and older adults, which is alarming because B12 and the other B vitamins are critical for your brain health, energy, mood, longevity, skin, joints, heart, and much more. This is why many leading experts now recommend supplementing with a complete B complex BUT, unfortunately, most options on the market are loaded with synthetic and potentially toxic ingredients. That’s why Purity Woods decided to create their new Organic B Complete formula that is fully USDA Certified Organic and made from whole food sources (like beets and guava). 10 Incredible Health Benefits of Whole Grains

Grains have gotten a lot of (undeserved) bad press over the years, but they are truly one of the most nutritious food groups you can eat– as long as you go for the whole, not refined, version. The fiber and resistant starch in whole grains benefit your gut, and a high intake of whole grains is linked to better blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Whole grains also contain antioxidants that fight inflammation, support weight loss, and might even boost longevity. (More)

Roadside Hedges Can Help Reduce Harmful Air Pollutants

Air pollution is a growing problem and is already linked to a number of negative health effects. However, a recent study from the UK has found that hedges grown as a roadside barrier can help reduce one specific type of pollution– ultrafine particles emitted by traffic. The hedge in question was made of western red cedar, which the researchers believe was successful because of its fine, evergreen leaves that the particles “bumped” into. (More)

Migraines Linked to Increased Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

Migraines affect approximately 14-15% of the global population and are already linked to other conditions like depression, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Some new research now indicates that they may also be connected to a higher risk of having a stroke (men and women) or a heart attack (women only). Researchers still aren’t sure why this is and emphasize that the possible risk increase is a small one, yet still something to be aware of. (More)

Exercise May Boost Anti-Cancer Immunity in Lynch Syndrome

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary disorder that significantly raises the risk of several types of cancer, particularly colorectal and endometrial cancers. Due to its genetic nature, there is no “cure” for Lynch syndrome, but a new study indicates that regular aerobic exercise can boost immune response and lower inflammation for those with Lynch syndrome. The study involved cycling for 45 minutes 3 times a week, but these findings do still need confirmation from other trials. (More)

Common Causes of Abdominal Pain + When Is It Serious?

Abdominal pain can be caused by everything from gas to food poisoning to a heart attack. Pain severity isn’t always an indicator of how serious the problem is, but if it doesn’t fade or happens alongside symptoms like chest pain, changes in bowel habits, or a fever, you should seek expert help. Pay attention to where the pain is most noticeable (upper or lower abdomen, right or left side, etc.) and how long it has lasted to help with identification of the cause. (More)

Compelling Health Fact

Your brain requires about 20% of the total energy used by your body. It uses much of this energy to send signals via the 86 billion neurons present in the brain. The rest is used for “housekeeping” chores, like keeping cells healthy.
